Frog Jump: A Number Recognition Game
Updated: Apr 4
We love games! Especially games that sneak in everyday math skills that keep kids happily playing and learning at the same time.
Frog Jump is a math game that was included in our lesson materials from our preschool curriculum, Experience Early Learning. The kids are having major fun playing this game!
The game is so simple to play, and even though this is an activity from Lesson 4 from March's monthly theme Pond Life we continue to play the game everyday. Really, all I did was set the game mat in front of them and ask them to figure out how to make the frog jump. The frogs are the game pieces, very cool! Experience Early Learning integrates all learning domains into the monthly theme. The kids absolutely love that they are not only learning about the life cycles of frogs in the science area, but also jumping from numbered lily pads with toy frogs during small group math time.
In the video you can see that Frog Jump is a child led game. I am a huge fan of children receiving non direct instruction whenever possible. Frog Jump is definitely a game that allows for this to happen.
Experience Early Learning includes observation questions for all activities in the Lesson Guide. Because Frog Jump is a child led game I was able to take those observation notes. The children did a awesome job of asking what the number was without my prompting, which allowed me to be able to assess effortlessly and relish in the playful learning that was taking place.
Frog Jump is the most requested game to play right now. I would say it has reached classic status, and it definitely will be my go to game for practicing number recognition.
